– Participatory Design in Healthcare – Participation, power and knowledge: An interactive workshop at the PDC 2016 conference

As a part of the 14th editition of the Participatory Design Conference taking place in Aarhus, Denmark on 15-19 August 2016, researchers from CIMT and the Center of Clinical Nursing Research in Southern Denmark will be doing a workshop on participatory design in healthcare.

The theme of the PDC 2016 conference is `Participatory Design in an Era of Participation´.
Today’s healthcare system is undergoing perceptible changes as the system is facing a paradigm shift due to demographic changes, technological developments, increasing complexity, organisational changes, and demands on user involvement and participation.

The aim of the workshop is to reflect on the challenges and dilemmas that emerge when participatory design is used in healthcare, because the epistemological, cultural, methodological assumptions of participatory design collide with the traditionally well-established science tradition, language, culture and biomedical approach in health science.

This workshop will be an opportunity to share our experiences in using participatory design in healthcare and research, or experiences in applying participatory design activities across different healthcare systems, particularly addressing dilemmas on knowledge, power and participation.

The workshop will be organized and run by:

  • Mette Juel Rothmann, nursing researcher, Department of Endocrinology/ Institute of Clinical Research, Odense University Hospital/ University of Southern Denmark. mette.rothmann@rsyd.dk.

  • Dorthe Boe Danbjørg, PhD, assistant professor, Center of Innovative Medical Technologies (CIMT)/ Institute of Clinical Research, Odense University Hospital/ University of Southern Denmark. Dorthe.Boe.Danbjoerg@rsyd.dk.

  • Charlotte Myhre Jensen, PhD student, Nursing specialist, Department of Orthopedics/ Institute of Clinical Research, Odense University Hospital/ University of Southern Denmark. Charlotte.Myhre.Jensen@rsyd.dk.

  • Jane Clemensen, associated professor, head of clinical research, Center of Innovative Medical Technologies (CIMT)/ Institute of Clinical Research

Odense University Hospital/ University of Southern Denmark.Jane.Clemensen@rsyd.dk

Date, time and location

The workshop takes place on August 16th from 13.30 to 17.00 (1.30 PM to 5 PM).

The venue for the two workshop days is INCUBA science park , a part of Aarhus University, Helsingforsgade 14, Aarhus, Denmark.

Workshop format

The workshop is aimed at researchers, practitioners, the industry and others who work across international healthcare contexts and will be a platform to share experiences on challenges and dilemmas occurring when participatory design is used in the field of healthcare.

Workshop participants are asked to submit an inspirational story describing challenges or dilemmas in relation to knowledge, power or participation in their use of participatory design in a healthcare setting. These stories will provide the material for the workshop. Challenges or dilemmas will be selected among submitted papers and some might be rewritten. In the end one challenge/dilemma may include several submitted papers.

The workshop will be facilitated as a “future workshop”, where the starting point will be the challenges and dilemmas. We will start by pinpointing the challenges, then create visions together, and finally come up with realistic solutions. The workshop will be facilitated using different tools reflecting the telling-making-enacting triade as described by Brandt (11, 12).

The outcome of the workshop will be production of a map highlighting the challenges, the proposed visions and the possible solutions.

The output will be a document describing the discussion on challenges. Furthermore, the paper will describe proposed visions and possible solutions.

How to participate

Due to the format of the workshop space is limited. We are looking for participants who have experiences in undertaking participatory design work or research in the area of healthcare and health science and are particular interested in:

  • Challenges in relation to power between participants
  • Challenges when the epistemological, cultural, methodological assumptions of participatory design collide with the traditionally well-established science tradition
  • Methods applied in participatory design to meet the challenges

To participate in the workshop, please send an inspirational story of your work describing your experiences with challenges or dilemmas in relation to knowledge, power or participation. What did you experience? And how did you overcome it or not?
Please send the story to mette.rothmann@rsyd.dk.

Deadline for submission: August 1st.

Registration

To participate in the workshop, you must be registered for at least one (1) day of the PDC 2016 Conference. If you are not already registered for the conference, you can wait to register until your participation in the workshop has been approved by us, which will happen 1-2 days after you submit your application (see above).
